Getting ready for your health care provider visit

What should I expect?

Most routine health care provider visits are a lot alike. During the visit, your health care provider will usually:

  • Ask you some questions
  • Do a physical exam
  • Give you medical advice or treatment

Plan ahead.

Before your appointment make a list of questions that you have and a list of medicines or supplements that you take. You might also ask a family member or friend to go to the health care provider’s office with you. They can help remind you of questions that you have.

Be prepared to talk with your health care provider about other topics, like:

  • Your medical history, including surgeries or medical problems you’ve had
  • Allergies to foods or medications
  • Your family medical history

Can I ask my health care provider questions?

Yes! At the end of the visit, ask if there’s anything else you need to know. Your health care provider can explain things you don’t understand. Your questions can help lead to better results for your health.
